What is Generative AI?. A Simple Guide to AI, Machine Learning… | by Saadia Minhas | UX World | Apr, 2025

We use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our daily tasks to get ideas and speed up our workflows.
I recently took a course offered by Google Cloud to learn about the basics of Generative AI and its role in AI. It helped me understand the building blocks of artificial intelligence and how Generative AI fits into the picture.
Let me explain what I learned in simple words, as it will help you understand the concepts of AI, Machine learning, and Generative AI.
Generative AI is the type of AI that creates new content, including text, audio, and images.
But let me first explain the concept of AI.
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
AI is a branch of computer science used to build computers and machines that can reason, learn, and act like humans.
AI enables computers to perform advanced functions. These include understanding and translating spoken and written language, analyzing data, making decisions, solving problems, and more.
From recommending what to watch next on Netflix to chatting with a support bot, AI is all around us.
Think of AI as the big umbrella under which other technologies like Machine Learning and Generative AI fall.
What is Machine Learning (ML)?
Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of AI.
It is a program or system that trains a model using input data. This trained model can make useful predictions using new data drawn from the same one used to train the model. Machine Learning gives the computer the ability to learn without explicit programming.
In simple words, it’s like teaching a computer how to learn from data. Instead of telling it exactly what to do, you give it examples, and it figures out the patterns.
For example, showing thousands of images of cats and dogs helps the machine learn to recognize them in the future.
